Blog EntryIt's A Big Ass Table. Take That, Apple !Mar 14, '08 10:51 AM
for everyone
Apparently I'm seriously behind on my feed-consuming -  this video was uploaded back in June 2007. But here you go anyway :

[List updated 080407]

[I've decided to also include the other spamming domains that got around gmail's spam filter, not just the kits-n-crafts shit, so the list will get pretty long soon]

Since about 2 months ago I started receiving loads of spam from various domains - I know we all do, like every day, but these always got around gmail's spam filter.

I'm suspecting that these spam originated from the same group of spammers, and they are very easy to spot :

1. The domain names are made up of real words but mean nothing when put together - for example, ideakidfall.com and finalseatfish.com

2. The first (and only) sentence of the spam is always "click here to learn more", followed by an image

3. The subject of the spam is either eHarmony or some sort of career-related ads such as "Become a nurse", "Become a physiologist" etc.

Anyway, I'm not sure about the other email providers but if you use gmail, here is the list of domain names to block :

1. ideakidfall.com
2. bigdonate.com
3. mouththingcould.com
4. jokeroadtosuccess.com
5. parknonestate.com
6. besttorches.com (= kits-n-crafts.com)
7. skillsurfers.com
8. muchclimbfight.com
9. piecebirthvisit.com
10. easyreligious.com
11. kits-n-crafts.com
12. motorfindempty.com
13. wifeturncall.com
14. earnotway.com
15. moveyardglass.com
16. finalseatfish.com
17. tellfeardress.com
18. birddogblack.com
19. trialofgooglerspamers.com (= kits-n-crafts.com)
20. helpeastdoubt.com
21. methodchanceflat.com
22. daddbestgiftsbread.com (= kits-n-crafts.com)
23. myteamtoy.com (= kits-n-crafts.com)
24. bringloanball.com
25.
burncloseaim.com
26.
fullfilacheckpoints.com (= kits-n-crafts.com)
27.
busthrowtax.com
28.
truetallnext.com
29.
callmindowner.com
30.
busyjustbrain.com
31.
trialbankrest.com
32.
mommsmoothfeelings.com (= kits-n-crafts.com)
33.
swisscheeseculture.com (= kits-n-crafts.com)

Blog EntryFunny Domain NamesMar 12, '08 2:00 AM
for everyone
Intercapping is often used to clarify a domain name. However, DNS is case-insensitive, and some names may be misinterpreted when converted to lowercase. For example: Who Represents, a database of artists and agents, chose whorepresents.com; a therapists' network thought therapistfinder.com looked good; and another website operating as of August 2007, is penisland.net, a website for Pen Island, a site that claims to be an online pen vendor, but exists primarily as a joke, as it has no products for sale. Other examples include cummingfirst.com, website of the Cumming First United Church in Cumming, GA and powergenitalia.com, a website for an Italian Power Generator company. In such situations, the proper wording can be clarified by use of hyphens. For instance, Experts Exchange, the programmers' site, for a long time used expertsexchange.com, but ultimately changed the name to experts-exchange.com.

Blog EntryYahoo Embracing an Open Approach to SearchFeb 26, '08 7:44 AM
for everyone
This is great news, I can't wait to try it out :
The open theme continues today as we are announcing that we are opening up Yahoo! Search itself. That's right -- you heard it correctly -- the Yahoo! Search experience will soon be open. This open search platform enables 3rd parties to build and present the next generation of search results. There are a number of layers and capabilities that we have built into the platform [...]

Because the platform is open it gives all Web site owners -- big or small -- an opportunity to present more useful information on the Yahoo! Search page as compared to what is presented on other search engines. Site owners will be able to provide all types of additional information about their site directly to Yahoo! Search. So instead of a simple title, abstract and URL, for the first time users will see rich results that incorporate the massive amount of data buried in websites -- ratings and reviews, images, deep links, and all kinds of other useful data -- directly on the Yahoo! Search results page.

See the open search preview and read the full article here.

Reported Itchmo :
In a Minnesota study, cat owners had a decreased risk of death from heart attack or other cardiovascular diseases, including stroke. Researchers found no such correlation in those with a pet dog.

Researchers analyzed 4,435 participants, 30–75 years of age, from the second National Health and Nutrition Examination Study. All participants were free of cardiovascular disease at the start of the study. Researchers used the Cox proportional hazards analysis during 20 years of follow-up to determine relative risk of death from all causes, heart attack and cardiovascular diseases, including stroke.

Lucky cat !
A curious little cat had to be rescued from two different vehicles in one day. It first started when firefighters in Florida responded to a call that a cat was stuck in the undercarriage of a car.

The firefighters spent hours in the pouring rain dismantling the vehicle, and when the cat was able to get loose, the cat slipped away and disappeared. The firefighters spent about an hour trying to find the cat, but the cat was nowhere to be found among the bushes and the parking lot.

Little did the firefighters know that the cat had climbed into the fire truck’s rear wheel well. They made at least two more emergency stops before returning to the station.

Yahoo ! just launched a live video broadcast service called Yahoo! Live, and this is how the Y! Live Blog describes it :
For viewers: How is Y! Live different from other online video sites? That’s simple: it’s live. What you’re watching, right now, is what other people are watching, right now. We wanted to create an experience that takes us back to live television, where things are happening now, in real time.

For broadcasters: You’ve been posting your stuff to MySpace and YouTube. Now, connect with your fans in real time on Y! Live. There is something intangible about a live performance – an excitement that you can’t replicate in pre-recorded format. Broadcast a performance, interact with your fans with video and chat, embed your broadcast anywhere - it’s all possible on Y! Live.

Since the news of their launch got out, loads of people are visiting the web site and are causing some outage, but I've been able to watch some of the live broadcasts and it's pretty cool.

Good job, Yahoo ! Now go make that thing scalable.

Blog EntryDecision Time for YahooFeb 6, '08 6:02 AM
for everyone
Michael Arrington has written yet another thoughtful article over at TechCrunch.
They can take Microsoft’s offer. Or they can try to do a deal with Google to outsource their search advertising and boost cash flow. They can also do nothing, but that would likely result in a flurry of shareholder lawsuits for a breach of fiduciary duty. Doing nothing isn’t an option for Yahoo’s management and board.

As has been widely reported, Yahoo could increase its cash flow by an estimated 25% if it surrendered to Google and handed over its search advertising business. That could give them enough of an excuse to turn down Microsoft’s offer. To outsource search advertising to Google, though, would be a huge hit to Yahoo’s pride. It’s an implicit acknowledgment that the years of work that went into Yahoo’s Panama project to revamp their search advertising platform was not enough - they still can’t compete with Google.

Of course, the hit to Yahoo’s pride will be worse if they sell outright to Microsoft, the dreaded enemy of Silicon Valley.

This is just sad. I couldn't agree more with what he said about Yahoo :
Yahoo is cute, cuddly and likable, but they did not execute the way Google did.

Yahoo Hong Kong sucks big time (good luck browsing any of their pages if you are still using Safari 2), but Yahoo US and Yahoo Taiwan have been doing great and I love using their products and services. I do use Google's more nowadays, but Yahoo is like an old friend whom I've known for years and it would totally break my heart to see it go :'(

If they could only choose between M$ and Google, I'm hoping with all my heart that they would go for Google. At least Google is an innovative company, just like Yahoo once was (and still kinda is - I really like their browser based MP3 player). And Microsoft? It's just... shit, shit, SHIT.

Reported The Register :
Three multinational record companies have filed copyright infringement claims in a Beijing court against China's most popular internet search engine, Baidu.com Inc.

Universal Music Ltd, Warner Music Hong Kong Ltd and Sony BMG Music Entertainment (Hong Kong) Ltd accuse Baidu of violating copyright by providing access to music files, according to an anti-piracy lobby group.

The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) said in a statement yesterday that the music giants have asked the court to order Baidu to remove all links to tracks that they own the rights to.

In addition, separate legal proceedings have been launched by the same three record firms alongside Gold Label Entertainment Ltd against Chinese media company Sohu.com Inc and its search engine, Sogou.

Yahoo! China can also expect legal action, said the IFPI, after it refused to budge on a landmark ruling in December which confirmed that it had violated Chinese law by committing mass copyright infringement through music downloads.

This is sad. Sad, sad, SAD.

Reported North West Florida Daily News :
Heather Gillman, who is represented by the American Civil Liberties Union, filed suit in federal court against the School Board and Ponce de Leon High School Principal David Davis. According to the complaint, Davis suspended several students for “expressing their support for the fair treatment of gays and lesbians.”

ACLU lawyer Benjamin Stevenson wrote in the complaint that Gillman’s cousin, an admitted lesbian identified as “Jane Doe,” complained to Davis about being harassed by students on Sept. 7.

“He explained that Jane Doe should not be gay and she should not tell people she is gay,” Stevenson wrote of Davis. “Defendant Davis also told Jane Doe the ‘gay pride’ was a disgrace to the school.”

This is totally amazing...
Every one of these extraordinary images comes from the brilliant patterns on the wings of moths and butterflies. These designs - each one unique to its species - are used either to attract a mate or for disguise against predators.

Photographer Kjell Sandved has made it his life's work to capture them and create this amazing butterfly alphabet, with every letter from A to Z and every number from 1 to 9.

Blog EntrySay NO To Microsoft !Feb 3, '08 10:22 AM
for everyone

Now THIS is where our government should learn from :
In 2002, Ireland passed a tax on plastic bags; customers who want them must now pay 33 cents per bag at the register. There was an advertising awareness campaign. And then something happened that was bigger than the sum of these parts.

Within weeks, plastic bag use dropped 94 percent. Within a year, nearly everyone had bought reusable cloth bags, keeping them in offices and in the backs of cars. Plastic bags were not outlawed, but carrying them became socially unacceptable — on a par with wearing a fur coat or not cleaning up after one’s dog.

Reported Windows Secrets :
Thousands of customers are paying almost $120 USD per year to Microsoft for an Internet subscription service that includes e-mail, security, and other features.

But Microsoft gives away almost identical services absolutely free in Windows Live and the Windows operating system itself, while neglecting to inform those who pay through the nose.
